Heirloom Techniques Series with Pamela Leggett: Hemstitching - March 25, 7-9pm ET

Hemstitching is a classic openwork technique that creates evenly spaced decorative holes in fabric.

In modern sewing, the look can be achieved by machine using a wing needle – a specialty needle that has large flanges on the sides - and decorative stitches on your sewing machine. The wing needle gently spreads the fabric fibers while the decorative stitch stabilizes the openings. For best results, use natural fibers with a loose weave such as linen, linen/rayon, or linen/cotton.

Hemstitching adds subtle texture without bulk. It’s ideal for heirloom garments, blouses, cuffs, hems, and home dec. With the right fabric and setup, it becomes a beautiful skill to add to your finishing toolbox.

In this lecture/demo class, Pamela will be demonstrating all you need to know to start on your own hemstitch project featuring her new pattern, The EveryDay Woven Tee.  She will show you how to create a simple and tasteful blouse that will be a stunning addition to your Spring/Summer wardrobe. With the right fabric and setup, hemstitching becomes a beautiful skill to add to your sewing toolbox.
