Made by a Fabricista: Me Made May

Hi everyone! By the time this post goes live, tomorrow will be my birthday!! So, this is a birthday dedicated post!! Typically, my birthday always falls on or around Memorial Day Weekend so there is always something to do.

For this post I challenged myself to make 3 pieces as I am always building my wardrobe. I now have a closet that is about 90% handmade. I love the theme in May as Me Made May where sewists post handmade looks every day for the entire month. I think it’s helpful to see what you have and what you can build upon in your closet. I would sew a lot of non-practical garments, as gorgeous as they were, I could not wear them day to day and found myself mostly sewing for social media posts. That has since changed, and I am pretty much #memadeeveryday!

My first garment is this fun blazer that I may using a printed Mikado from Kimberly Goldson. She is one of my favorite designers and I love that I get to use this fabric to create my own look. I used Simplicity #S9825 for a simplicity pattern I would say this is more of an advanced pattern. I started thinking it would be a quick make, but it includes detailed tailoring techniques. It’s a great pattern to learn and improve your skills.

For the second look I created a set. I saw this pretty pink denim and just knew I had to have it. Colored denim is so much to work with and make moving away from the traditional hues of blue. I love the trend of the barrel jeans I saw some inspiration to recreate them with side cut outs and I absolutely love them. Even though I know that these are a trend right now I don’t think the shape is too exaggerated to not last through seasons.

I used Know Me Pattern #ME2052. I determined where I wanted the leg seam to start. From there I lengthen the lower panel. Sewing them both partially together and allowing the sides to stay open.

The top was a very quick and easy sew, it is the Clay Blouse which is a free PDF pattern. Cropped camp shirts are so on trend right now and I used this hot pink voile fabric. It's super lightweight and slightly see through, and 100% cotton making it perfect for summer. The pattern has kimono sleeves and it's sewn with French seams it has an all-in-one collar which makes it for a quick sew. I love the monochromatic look however both pieces can be worn separately further adding to my wardrobe.

Happy belated birthday. The blazer is fabulous and I love the colored denim. I'm thinking of following the same trend and making something with it.
