Made By A Fabricista: Classic Denim Jacket for Fall

I am definitely a summer and warm weather person – the hotter the better, in my book! This week is the first week in Colorado we’ve had some consistent fall temperatures in the 60’s and 70’s, so it’s unfortunately time to start putting away the shorts & sundresses and move into transitional fall layers.

I always grab some kind of jacket/layer when I leave the house and lately I’ve been wanting a dark denim jacket, but I only have a light wash denim or black, no in between. So, off to Fabric Mart I went and I started digging in my pattern stash!

I ended up picking up this gorgeous dark blue stretch denim on sale at Fabric Mart and found this McCall 7729 pattern that was perfect!

This pattern was SO easy to make! The pattern says average difficulty level, but I definitely think you could be a confident beginner and make this look great. The topstitching really adds a great polished finish. The pattern calls for buttons and buttonholes, but I used these bright gold snaps since I typically wear gold jewelry.

I chose to just serge all my inside seams for a quick and easy finish. You could definitely French or Hong Kong seam them if you wanted a cleaner, more elevated finish.

I chose view A, which is the cropped version, but the pattern has multiple lengths and I think I’m going to make a full-length jacket, lined with sherpa or something warm, for another version! I left the hem raw as well, which will fray, but that’s exactly the look I’m going for! After a few more washes, the denim will soften up and the hem will be perfectly distressed.

I highly recommend trying this pattern out of you’re looking for a classic, simple construction denim jacket. I think there’s tons of fun add ons you could do to a simple jacket too, which makes this jacket a great blank canvas! You could add on patches or appliques, you could do some bleach dying, or play with different shades of denim to create a super unique jacket. I know I will repeat this pattern and will pick up more of this amazing denim from Fabric Mart!

Thanks again for reading – happy sewing!

Jacket looks great on you. I never would have thought to leave the hem raw. I like that idea, thanks for sharing it. That pattern looks like it is fast and easy but still has some detail to make it look super.

They are from Amazon, actually! I am going to paste the link, but I'm not sure if it will post properly. They take a couple tries to get the hang of setting them right, but they are very sturdy and durable!

If the link doesn't posts correctly, the item name on Amazon is "Toututu 120 Sets Leather Snap Fasteners Kit, 12.5mm Metal Snap Buttons Press Studs with 4 Setting Tools"
