Made by a Fabricista: A Versatile Cotton 2 Piece Set!

Happy Saturday LOVES!

I am finally feeling less overwhelmed and adjusting to this distance teaching. I am back in full swing for the new 2020-2021 academic school year and even though we encountered challenges the first week, I am happy to have survived the first 3 weeks. As we plan to transition to brick and mortar (in person) in a few weeks, I am praying that our students and teachers remain safe. 2020 year has allowed me to learn, reflect, grow and overcome many fears and challenges and be open to change.

This month’s make had me in deep reflection about my sewing journey and how much I have grown over the past 3 years. I am no longer scared of taking risks, speaking my truth and being my authentic self. If you have been reading my blog posts for a while, I am pretty sure you have seen the growth as well. Fabricmart has allowed me each month to remain consistent in my journey and next month I celebrate my 3 year blog anniversary with Fabricmart.

Now let’s get into this set! I have been eyeing this cotton fabric for a while and waited until it went on sale to request it. I absolutely fell in love with the direction of the print, the color and the fact that I can rock it with so many of my previous Fabricmart makes. The original plan was to make a maxi shirt dress but knew I would not get the most out of my look. After feeling the texture and weight of the cotton fabric, I knew I had to make yet another set or faux jumpsuit. This fabric feels like satin, drapes like rayon and is soft like cotton. Unfortunately, it is sold out but FabricMart has a wide selection of cotton here.

The Top!

For the top, I opted to use Simplicity 8891 View C that I had in my pattern stash for over a year. I so wanted to make this classic kimono style top that was work appropriate and possibly rock to dinner as well with these jeans I made for my Fabricista Challenge (the winning jeans here). Now that I am finally comfortable with button holes, this quick and easy make was right up my alley.

This top has 4 pin tucks in the waist area in the back and 4 in the front (2 on each pattern piece) which makes it easy to pattern match. The back is not cut on fold which adds to the shaping of the top. When working with prints and stripes, be sure to select a pattern that will showcase its beauty and will be less headache to pattern match. I did change up the direction of the print (horizontally) for the top and cut across grain to create a great look.

The Super WIDE Leg Pants!

I absolutely love the Vogue 1708 jumpsuit pattern pants and yes, it is my new favorite. I made the shorts last month (a yellow set here) and the fit is amazing. I opted to just make my signature wide leg pants as I am transitioning my makes for fall. This pattern fits a curvy girl right out of the pattern envelope and the adjustments I made for the shorts were NOT needed for the pants. I absolutely love the drape and the fit.

Why Sets?

Call me the Queen of sets, separates, or faux jumpsuit but I absolutely enjoy making it! I truly love to mix and match my clothing and get the most wear. I made this solid linen set two years ago here and this new set will surely be mixed with it.

I have made quite a few sets this year here, here and here and I definitely plan to make at least one more set before the end of the year. Want to make an amazing sets? Be sure to check out the linen, suiting or even the challis section and grab at least 5 to 6 yards of solid or neutral so that you can definitely mix and match your makes.

Thank you so much for reading and please feel free to check out my Instagram page to see how I mix and match my sets. Don’t forget to subscribe to my blog HERE to receive all the latest updates of my recent makes.

One Love,
Marica - www.maricamitchell.com
